Are Quickbooks and Other Small Business Apps Too Pricey

software

I’ve been away for a few days and spent some time in my office renewing subscriptions for several apps. Yoast, for my SEO (about $200), Elementor (for WordPress design) about $100 and Quickbooks, about $900. It got me thinking, am I paying too much for the software I use?

Shawn Busse, wrote about this in a LinkedIn Post about “Is Quickbooks too expensive“.

Entrenched businesses like Quickbooks continue to go up market, raising their prices. Meanwhile, new competitors arise and feed off the lower end of the market that’s looking for a better deal. Eventually there’s a tipping point, and the entire market shifts away from the incumbent.

Cloud computing, SaaS apps are never going away and they are helpful, however, the fees we all pay for this convenience adds up.

No longer do you pay $249 or $549 for the software on a CD and download, and use it for life. Nope. You use it via a website or installed plugin and pay a monthly or annual subscription fee. In return you get their premium support and get updates to the software.

Is it worth it to look at cheaper software?

Should you?

Should we look at Zoho Books or Xero, Freshbooks, Wave Account, or other solutions that might be cheaper?

Yes indeed QuickBooks is the default for many (most!) accountants, but there’s others who use other products as well.

Same for other tools we use, video or graphics editing, website building and more.

I’ve used QuickBooks for years, since the days it came on a floppy disk! It is more expensive than ever. Yet it does add lots of value, and even 3rd party integration. It works well.

One of the challenges in business, what do you keep investing in and paying a premium for and what do you look for a cheaper price on.
