Starting a business is relatively easy. You set up the legal structure and make a sell, you’re in business. However, growing the business and building a successful business is much harder. Part of the success is to identify and embrace your entrepreneurial zone of genius.
Do You Love What You’re Doing?
Most of the people I’ve spoken to have started a business to solve a problem. They couldn’t wind up their lawn hose and crafted something to solve that problem. They then started selling that invention. Or, the accountant who was working for someone else and then started their own business to help others with their accounting. Or maybe like me, you were fired from a job and your skills blossomed into you working for yourself.
When you wake up in the morning and are excited about what you do, that’s one aspect of thriving in your entrepreneurial zone of genius.
Passion is Not Enough. Do What You Don’t Love.
While doing what you LOVE is important, it’s also important to be able to do what you don’t love. Most business owners don’t like filing taxes, managing their finances or doing a Facebook advertising campaign. However, we know these things (and others) are an important part of running a successful business. My friend Loren Feldman talks about this in his 21 Hats podcast.
As your business grows you can delegate some of the things you don’t like to others. Your accountant, Facebook advertising consultants and etc.
However, you still need to manage and oversee these areas of your business, especially as you’re starting out.
Be The Best At What You Do.
It’s essential to be the best at what you do. If you’re a carpenter and making custom stairs but not making the best stairs, you won’t have repeat customers. They want the best. There’s little margin to NOT be the best when you’re a small business owner. Imagine selling pool cleaning services and everyone knows you do the cleaning services only at 91%. Your customers will know that you don’t do great work.
The best way to grow in your entrepreneurial zone of genius is to understand who you are, what you love, what you don’t live. As you build your business and have a team, you can delegate to others who can help you serve your customers. Who can help you focus on other areas of growth in your business.
